A Curious Custom

People passing Mr.T.W.Green’s toy and sweet shop in The Alley on Wednesday evening must have been struck by the number of children who were eagerly thronging the shop. The cause of this was a curious custom long observed here of selling packets of damaged toys at a penny each on New Years Eve.

The toys are really remnants left at the warehouses after the Christmas trade. The majority of the toys are very little damaged, and as each packet contains 4 or 5 articles, the children get a good bargain.

The custom was instituted by the present proprietor’s father some 40 years ago and although it is, of course, quite unremunerative, it has been kept up as a time-honoured custom ever since.

Death of Mr.T.W.Green

We regret to report the death of Mr.Thomas Walter Green, of 58, High Street. He had been ailing for some time past but had kept his bed only three weeks; he passed away at 1am on (Friday) morning, the immediate cause of death was pneumonia.

Mr.Green, who was in his 62nd year, was a son of the late Mr.Thomas Walter Green, who started the confectionery and toy business at 58, High Street in 1840.

As a young man Mr Green was a sailor in the mercantile marine and visited China and other parts of the world. After spending some years at sea, he came home and assisted his father in the business, and he has carried it on himself since his father’s death 8 years ago.

He married a Miss Austin of Wellington, Salop, and she with one son and two daughters survives him. Much sympathy is felt with them in their bereavement.
